Water safety is of huge importance for both central and local government as well as private companies and organisations that own or control land with access to water.  Water offers a great recreational facility at all times of the year and issues that signs must address include swimming, dangers of ice at other times of the year and shallow water.  While most site managers will provide both safety belts and ropes but signs ensure legal considerations are addressed.

Experience suggests that water safety signs are often the target of vandalism and care must be taken that the materials used are sufficiently robust.  Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) is a commonly used material and at Sirocco we have found that this material tends to be ideal.  The advantages of GRP for water signs and safety signs is that the colour fastness is excellent and graffiti can be very easily cleaned off the surface.  GRP also offers good resistance to impact damage.

Water safety signs must also be supplied with posts or other fixing structures robust enough to withstand attempts to pull them out of the ground.  We normally recommend steel posts with base plates and secured with post crete or post mix.   Steel posts should be galvanised and Sirocco will normally spray to an agreed colour.  Timber posts can also be used for water safety signs with either oak or pressure treated softwood proving popular.

Graphic design is a further consideration in the provision of water safety signs and information.  Extensive helpful information is provided by ROSPA who issue both guidance on standard symbols and approaches.  ROSPA are an excellent place to start when researching the requirements of complying with the relevant water safety legislation and producing signs to match
