Interpretation Sign
Welcome to Sirocco Signs – we are a leading supplier of interpretation signs, also known as interpretation panels or signs. We offer a full design service but are also happy to work from your own electronic artwork. We offer tough and robust external graphics using a unique anodised aluminium printing process as well as framing structures for interpretation signs and sandblasted timber or stone products to extend the range.
At Sirocco we strongly believe that the only effective interpretation sign is one that is read by visitors and one that creates a lasting impression. Effective interpretation should be simple with no more than 250 words maximum and with a strong visual and graphical content. Also important in creating an effective sign is the quality of the interpretation message. Ask if the text is clear and easy to understand – the sign will not be read and will fail in its’ interpretation role if the text is full of technical jargon or content. The common test is whether an eight or ten your old will read it and remain interested. Especially if your sign is the first of one in a series of interpretation trails the text must draw people in. When they reach the second sign have they been enthralled by the first that they want to ‘turn over the page’ and read the next interpretation instalment!
Framing structures are another important consideration in the overall mix of designing interpretation signs. Lectern frames or post mounted structures must be designed to blend with the surrounding environment – an interpretation sign should not dominate the landscape but should fit into it. The most common options are oak, softwood and steel lectern frames with vertically mounted posts also frequently specified. A sandblasted timber or stone lectern frame or base is also a popular means of fixing interpretation signs as the tactile nature of the sandblasted graphics provides a really individual solution. Lectern frames allow a visitor of all ages to read and enjoy the panel without it obstructing the view. Disabled visitors and those in a wheel chair can also easily read an interpretation sign that is set into a lectern frame.
